Old Spitalfields Market, with its origins in the 17th century as a humble farmers' market, has been transformed into a vibrant heart of London's diversity and vibrancy. This transformation is significant given Spitalfields' former reputation as a notorious and unsafe area, even associated with the infamous Jack the Ripper. Today, this historic location stands as a testament to London's ability to reinvent itself, and is now bustling with unique boutiques and a plethora of global culinary delights.
Open every day of the week, the market hosts an impressive weekly antiques market with over 80 stalls, renowned as one of London's finest. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in an eclectic array of collectibles - from creatively repurposed vintage vinyl to sterling silver jewelry and rare antique finds. This treasure trove attracts thousands of visitors, both locals and tourists, in search of that unique gift or personal keepsake.
In addition to its array of stalls, Old Spitalfields Market is a hub for local businesses. From high-end fashion boutiques and expert tailors to specialty cheese shops that rival those in Paris, the market is a showcase of craftsmanship and quality products. The market is also home to the original All Saints flagship store, adding a touch of contemporary fashion to the historic setting.
Every day at Old Spitalfields is different. Fridays are for fashion and art lovers, with global haberdashery and local design. The first Friday of every month is a haven for vinyl lovers, with a record fair offering rare and high-quality finds. Saturdays at the market are ever-changing, with weekly themes ranging from vintage fashion to the best of local merchants. Seasonal beer festivals, cultural nights and events celebrating the area's rich history and culture also feature prominently.
Sundays are particularly lively, attracting families with a diverse range of goods from leather goods to antique toys. This busy day offers entertainment for all ages and a dazzling array of affordable trinkets. Monday through Wednesday, the market reverts to its general vendor setup, ideal for leisurely browsing of vintage clothing and niche boutiques. These quieter days allow visitors to engage more intimately with the specialized art dealers.
The range of food on offer at Old Spitalfields is as varied as the produce. The Market Hall is a gastronomic delight, from London's famous fish and chips to modern French and Asian fusion cuisine. Bleecker Street's New York-style burgers and Square Pie's classic English pies and mash are just a few highlights. For those with a sweet tooth, Flavour Town Bakery's cupcakes are a must.
The market's award-winning restaurants and cafes have established it as a premier dining destination in East London. Wine bars, modern pubs, family-friendly eateries and charming cafes offer a relaxing respite from the buzzing energy of the market. These establishments cater to a wide range of tastes and attract food lovers from all over the world.
More than just a market, Old Spitalfields Market is a microcosm of London's history, culture and evolving identity. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a vibrant and diverse hub, the market is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the essence of the London spirit.

1st July 2015 at 01:33This was our first visit and wasn’t quite sure of what type of market it is. Lots of different types of stands – clothes, food, unusual items, etc. Plenty of places to eat round the outside and in the middle. A good way to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday morning.

24th November 2015 at 14:59Old Spitalfields is a lost world of its own, becoming more posh as time passes. Lots of fabulous places to eat, special events (gelato week to name just one) and so many things to buy – vintage, trendy or just odd. It’s definitely a must-try for a Saturday or Sunday.

4th June 2016 at 00:14One of my favorite places in London. Some stalls may be a bit generic, but you can find everything from old LPs to stunning artwork and cute fashion and design accessories and nice, helpful and attentive vendors to have a little chat with.
