During the week, Bededito Calixto Square looks just like any other square in Sao Paolo. But come the weekend, and this place turns into one of the city's hot spots.
One of the main attractions of this area is the Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto, also known as Feira de Artes Antiguidades Artesanato da Praça Benedito Calixto. Popping up once a week, this antiques and arts fair is one of the most charming in the city, and should definitely be visited by anyone staying in Sao Paolo over the weekend, in addition to the Feira de Antiguidades do MASP.
The 320 stalls of the Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto sell a little bit of everything: vinyl records, vintage clothing, antique furniture, vintage toys, old telephones, watches, radio, glasses, silverware, porcelain and other decorative objects. Local handcrafts and homemade items are also well represented here, and there is a real joyful vibe to the whole organization. The Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto is also renown for is live music and plenty of delicious food, meaning it is a thriving and excellent place to spend a sunny Saturday.
There is always something for everyone to be found on the stalls of the Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto and the surrounding area. Therefore, if money is still burning in the pocket after a thorough look around the flea market, there is surely somewhere to part with it in the neighborhood, like funky boutiques and lovely cafés.
As with any antique market, it is usually advised to show up early to the Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto for the best chances of bargains. But bargain hunting does not seem to be the priority for visitors here. It is more about soaking up the ambiance, grabbing a tasty treat, chatting with vendors and other shoppers and generally enjoying life. The Feira da Praça Benedito Calixto does however get busier and busier as the day goes on though, so those who do not enjoy fighting through crowds are perhaps best advised to arrive early!
