Hobart, the capital of Australia‘s island state of Tasmania, sits on the River Derwent. At its fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses host galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district with narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages. Dotted throughout the town are many incredible antique stores, ranging from big shops to those in side streets and laneways. History buffs will find plenty to be impressed by in Hobart and the multitude of antiques means that a unique souvenir or collectible is not hard to find.

Many of the antique stores in Hobart are found towards the center of the town, though there are not many streets that you can walk through without coming upon some antique or vintage treasures. A great place to start is The Antiques Warehouse. It is the largest, and one of the highest regarded Hobart epicenters for all things antique. The space has a constantly changing array of beautifully presented merchandise featuring a wide range of antiques, fine and country furniture, collectibles, and garden artifacts. Just a short walk from this store is The Coin and Stamp Place, whose specialty is somewhat given away by the name! This store holds a fine stamp and medal collection as well as old Australian currency notes and vintage coins.

Kent and Kent Antiques is found on Hobart’s waterfront. Expect authentic antiques from Tasmania’s rich convict and colonial history. The collection also includes clocks, estate jewelry, silver, glass and ceramics, early curios and relics as well as maritime antiques and instruments. Another specialized shop in the same area is Antique Prints and Maps. The quality and variety of the pieces is fantastic and the owner is so friendly and good at what he does. Housed in an old 19th-century warehouse, The Astrolabe Booksellers deals in antique, rare, and collectible books and is a treasure trove for booksellers and bibliophiles.

Hobart has a fantastic mix of antique stores, from those with a little bit of everything to those that sell only one specific kind of collectible antique. This makes it a fascinating town to shop in and guarantees many interactions with incredibly knowledgeable collectors in kind.

"Reserving flights 8 to 9 months in advance helps me manage my airfare expenses. Even in the best of times, many of the markets I follow in France don't publish their plans that far in advance. Fleamapket provides the newest information, well before I can find it online."
Nicolas Martin
