Hobart, the capital of the Australian island state of Tasmania, sits on the Derwent River. On fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses house galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district of narrow laneways and colonial-era cottages. There are many incredible antique shops scattered throughout the city, from large stores to those tucked away in side streets and alleys. History buffs will find much to be impressed by in Hobart, and the variety of antiques means it is not hard to find a unique souvenir or collectible.
Many of Hobart's antique shops are located in the city centre, although there are not many streets you can walk down without coming across some antique or vintage treasures. A good place to start is The Antiques Warehouse. It is Hobart's largest and one of the most respected epicenters for all things antique. The space has an ever-changing selection of beautifully presented merchandise with a wide range of antiques, fine and country furniture, collectibles and garden artifacts. Just a short walk from this store is The Coin and Stamp Place, whose specialty is as its name suggests! This store has a fine collection of stamps and medals as well as old Australian banknotes and vintage coins.
Kent and Kent Antiques is located on Hobart's waterfront. Expect authentic antiques from Tasmania's rich convict and colonial history. The collection also includes clocks, estate jewelry, silver, glass and ceramics, early curios and relics, and maritime antiques and instruments. Another specialist shop in the same area is Antique Prints and Maps. The quality and variety of pieces is fantastic and the owner is so friendly and good at what he does. The Astrolabe Booksellers, housed in an old 19th century warehouse, deals in antique, rare and collectible books and is a treasure trove for booksellers and bibliophiles.
Hobart has a fantastic mix of antique shops, from those that sell a little bit of everything to those that specialize in one type of collectible antique. This makes it a fascinating city to shop in and guarantees lots of interaction with incredibly knowledgeable collectors in person.
