When you think of antiques, Kansas may not be the first name that comes to mind. Although not as well stocked with antique stores as its neighbor to the east, the Sunflower State still has a secret weapon: Merriam's Antique District.
Merriam is a Kansas town described as small in size but big in heart. For a small town, it has a surprising number of quality antique shops. It can be overlooked because of its proximity to Kansas City and its famous antique scene, which is bustling with shops like the First Friday Festival Weekends at West Bottoms and River Market Antiques. But this place is worth checking out on its own, especially for those with a love of all things vintage and collectible. The shops are nicely scattered around the city, so you can enjoy a day of strolling and taking in the sights while hitting each one for some bargains.
One of the larger places to shop for antiques in Merriam is the Shawnee Antique Mall. With over 15,000 square feet of space filled with more than 100 independent antique dealers, this is a place where you can easily spend a couple of hours browsing! Across the street from this mall is Slater St Antiques. This is one of the newer additions to the city's collection of antique and vintage shops and has already received rave reviews for its friendly staff, reasonable prices, and wonderful selection of vintage and upcycled goods.
Another antique mall in Merriam worth a visit is A Fabulous Find. From the street, it looks like a normal-sized store, but it is surprisingly large when you walk through the front door! Fortunately, the space is very well organized and the staff is always available to help you find what you are looking for. The Glenwood Antique Mall is located a little further south and may be a little pricier than the others, but with over 100 vendors, it is always possible to find collectible antiques. Of course, bargaining is encouraged, so there is no need to be put off by the price tags.
Christopher Filley Antiques in Merriam is a large store with merchandise displayed in several rooms. However, there is only one owner rather than several dealers. Every inch of space is used to display the many treasures found here, and the owner is incredibly knowledgeable about a wide range of antiques and art.
Another antique store that is definitely worth a visit is Slater St. Antiques. The store is located in a one of a kind, historic house from 1925 that's been converted into a business, and hosts over 25 vendors selling a stunning variety of unique, vintage, and antique items for sale from clothing to housewares, furniture, and more. Slater St. Antiques is the brain-child of Sara Garcera, who is none other than the daughter of Chuck and Martha Garcera, the owners of the famous King Richard's Antique Center located in Whittier, CA. And since the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, you are guaranteed to find a rich selection of retro, vintage and antique items, as well as quality service.
This selection of antique stores found in Merriam is just the beginning! There are many more to explore and a huge variety of collectibles to be found. During a weekend getaway to Kansas City, you can easily spend a day shopping here.
Merriam is a town in Kansas that is described as small in size but big in heart and for a small town, it packs in a surprising number of quality antique stores and while it may get overlooked due to its larger neighbor Kansas City, this place is worth noting in its own right, especially by those who have a love of all things antique and collectible.
