Just a quick 30-minute drive east of Minneapolis, the old-world Stillwater is one of Minnesota’s oldest towns and the perfect location for antique collections. The town is filled with historic inns and B&Bs, and antiques play a large role in the community’s commerce and culture.

The town is considered the birth place of Minnesota, so there is really no better place to find historical treasures and pieces of American history.

Many of the buildings in Stillwater have retained their historic appearance, and vintage and antique items are very much a part of the town’s heritage and culture. Everyone here, be they hotel owner or antique store manager, seems to have a solid knowledge of the local history, and can enthrall visitors with stories of yesteryear. With regards to antiques, this is exactly what shoppers are hoping for, and here in Stillwater collectors are guaranteed a tale behind the treasure.

Most of the antique stores in Stillwater are found on Main Street, and American Gothic Antiques is a great place to start. The two floors within are filled with hundreds of collectable items, spread among the different booths of the various independent vendors operating from within. Civil War memorabilia is the specialty here. The Midtown Antique Mall has some incredible furniture items, both large and small, and other unique curios and collectables dot the shelves of each booths.

If antique lighting is your bag, Stillwater Antique District has you covered and you should head straight to Let There Be Light Antiques. The selection of lighting fixtures here is quite mind-blowing, as over 500 pieces are displayed within. That is a lot of light indeed! As well as the specialty stores, there is a wide selection of other items to be found in Stillwater, so a visit here should definitely not be missed.
