Attalla is one of the smaller cities in Alabama, and as such does not have a sprawling downtown with hundreds of huge stores. However, when it comes to antique stores, the emphasis is on quality over quantity, which is not to say that there are not many great stores to choose from. Because of its smaller size, it is one of those friendly cities where it feels like everyone knows everyone. After stopping by one or two of its antique shops, you will be helpfully pointed in the direction of the others and welcomed in like an old friend!
A fantastic selection of antique shops in Attalla can be found in the same small four-block area. The historic building of the family-owned Walker Drug Store is now home to Toy Utopia. This may be more for the hardcore toy collector than the general antique enthusiast, but it is an incredible mall to stroll through. Those more focused on antiques can head across the street to Somewhere in Time, an antique mall with 16 vendors spread over 5000 square feet of space. The vendors here strive to keep their collections diverse, so there is something for everyone to take home.
On the same street in downtown Attalla is Emma Kate's Cottage. Housed in a beautiful building built in the late 1800's, this antique store makes the most of the historic setting, using the old brick and exposed wood walls to create a nostalgic atmosphere that only grows as you browse through the goods on offer. Blossom Antiques is a smaller store on the same block that has some wonderful collectibles.
More antique treasures can be found by those willing to take a short drive out of downtown Attalla. Mountain Top Flea Market can be found out on Route 278 and this outdoor market is open every Sunday of the year, rain or shine. Gadsden is also just a stone's throw away, with more antique malls and shops to delight collectors.
Finally, it should be noted that Attalla is located on the Highway 11 Antique Alley Yard route, at the intersection of Hwy 11/3rd Street and Hwy 431/5th Ave. Nicknamed the "Happenin", the US 11 Antique Alley and Yard Sale is certainly a hub for vintage enthusiasts. Once a year on a four-day weekend after Mother’s Day, more than 30,000 visitors travel the 502-mile route shopping for antiques and collectibles across five states and 80 participating towns from Meridian, Mississippi to Bristol, Virginia.
