Once a month, the centuries-old Rua do Lavradio becomes the home of the Feira do Lavradio, also known as the Feira Do Rio Antigo. This area of Rio de Janeiro was once run down, and in 2004, the organizers of the Feira do Lavradio had the idea to create this antiques and collectibles fair to bring life and culture back to these historically significant streets. A monthly event may not seem like enough to achieve this, but in fact this area has been revitalized by the flea market, which attracts more than 20,000 visitors each time it is held.
The rich variety of items for sale at Feira do Lavradio is one of the reasons why this antique market is so beloved by locals and so popular with visiting tourists. There are always antique treasures to be found, easily spotted by those in the know and on the lookout for excellent bargains. In fact, these shoppers can often be found at the Feira Do Rio Antigo at the crack of dawn, rummaging around with flashlights. For the more relaxed visitor, there are vintage and homemade clothes, jewelry, accessories, home decor and beautiful works of art.
The Feira do Lavradio is also home to many small boutique stalls selling hand sewn bags, traditionally made wooden sandals and many other handcrafted items. All of these items are of excellent quality and make quirky additions to your wardrobe, as well as great souvenirs of your time shopping in Rio!
The entire street is truly a shopper's paradise, and in addition to the hundreds of market stalls of the Feira Do Rio Antigo, many other shops are held in the colonial buildings in the nearby area, as well as many cafes and places to stop for refreshments to enjoy the people-watching and recharge ready for more bargain hunting.
The historic nature of the architecture of the venue truly immerses visitors in the past, creating the perfect atmosphere for a vintage and collectibles show like the Feira do Lavradio.
