Virginia is one of the finest States in the US for colonial architecture, antiques, and collectibles. And this taste for beautiful old things can be found in one of the largest flea markets in the state: the Hillsville Flea Market.
The town of Hillsville has a population of just 2500. But twice a year on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the town can see up to 400-500 vendors (1,000 vendors on average on Labor Day weekend), and 500,000 visitors passing through. This makes the Hillsville Flea Market one of the largest flea markets in Virginia. This flea market has been the twice-yearly appointment for antique, vintage, and knick-knack lovers since the 1960s. No wonder enthusiasts flock from all over the state and even as far as California and Canada to take a look at the collectible items that vendors bring to sell here.
Vendors at the Hillsville Flea Market set up their tent shops down the streets, inside the massive VFW parking area, and throughout the surrounding fields affectionately named “Bowman” and “Hunley”. Surrounding the flea market area are hundreds of yard sales, so these markets really are events for the whole community to take part in. These fleas are great places to find deals on antiques, furniture, vinyl records, books, baseball cards, coins, guns, comics, old pictures, army surplus, signs, vintage clothes, gadgets, toys, knives, collectibles, tools, socks, and so much more.
The Hillsville Flea Market is conveniently located in southwest Virginia, less than two miles off of Interstate 77. Because of the number of vendors and sights to see, visitors will often stay for a night or the whole long weekend to have enough time to take it all in. There are great local eateries in the heart of the market and historic downtown, and food trucks are dotted throughout the festivities.
The Hillsville Flea Market begins on Friday and continues through Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Vendors can start selling at 7 am and most close up around 6 p.m. With these long days of bargain hunting, it is just as well that a food truck is never too far away! To find a good parking spot and to avoid traffic it is best to get an early start.
