Once a month, the Mercado de Motores creates one of the most unique market experiences in Madrid. Set up inside the Museo del Ferrocarril (Madrid's Railway Museum), a disused train station filled with antique steam and diesel locomotives, this vintage market uses the space in the most fantastic way, with vendors setting up and squeezing in among the old engines, creating a stunning and original antique market experience that is not to be missed.
The whole affair is incredibly lively, and it is clear that many locals simply enjoy the chance to hang out and meet up with friends and regular vendors, as well as browse through the wares on display. The Mercado de Motores is a popular flea market that can get a little crowded, but shoppers should not be put off as it does not detract from the experience.
There are some fabulous treasures to be found between the trains at Mercado de Motores: old typewriters, vintage clothing collections, antique furniture, bread bins and other kitchen utensils, silverware, ornaments, luggages, bicycles, old cameras and radios, globes, mirrors, glassware, crockery, lamps, vintage photographs and posters, and much more. Although visitors may plan to visit the Mercado de Motores thinking they don't care much for old trains, they can't help but be a little mesmerized by them as they pass by while strolling from stall to stall. It is a remarkable setup and one that everyone will enjoy.
To keep the energy at the Mercado de Motores high, there is live music on site and plenty of refreshments to be found in the station. Once you arrive, you will certainly not be in a hurry to leave (the market operates over two days from 11:00 to 22:00), and you will most likely find an excuse to come back the next day for more!
